During my walking tours of Positano I use to stop into small boutiques to show fashion in Positano, the so called Moda Positano.

When you think of  centers of fashion, Positano may not be your first choice, but trust me, it should definitely be high on your list. You may want to visit Positano anyway because it is a picturesque cliffside village on the southern Italian Amalfi Coast with a pebble beach and ancient winding streets, but it is also a mecca of boutiques and eateries.

The fashion in Positano, or Moda Positano, is made here by extremely talented tailors and artisan shoemakers who have passed their secrets down through generations. One of the first dressmakers in Positano was my grandmother who also worked for The Fontana Sisters  and taught to many people how to make beautiful dresses with natural fabrics. Between all the students who learned the art of sewing I cannot forget Ivan’s grandma, nonna Anna.

Ivan is one of my close friends and his family has a beautiful store in the center of Positano, Via dei Mulini. Nonna Anna started tailoring when she was 15 years old and the art of sewing was continued by her son in law Raffaele (Ivan’s father).  Raffaele decided to open a fashion boutique in 1980 and they soon became popular all over Europe.

Nowadays all the family works together and the 80s style is revisited by the beautiful hands of Cristiana, the young designer as well as Ivan’s sister. Ivan and his other sister Ambra work as sellers, they are friendly and love to suggest the dress that better suits you.

I always stop in Via dei Mulini Store to meet my friend Ivan, not only because I love talking with all the family but also for buying their dresses, shirts, skirts, shorts….

Our fashion is “casual summer” and has been worn by some of the most fashionable people in history. The fibers are natural and beautiful such as linen, lace and cotton, feeling lovely against your skin.

Now that we’ve whetted your appetite for a holiday on the Amalfi Coast, schedule in a tour of some of the region’s best and most exclusive boutiques. Some items you should pick up on your shopping jaunt around Positano include:

  • A cute little cotton or linen shirt
  • A white or bright, low cut, flowing maxidress
  • Flat Positano Sandals also called Capri Sandals, perfect for walking up and down all the windy streets and cobbled steps, handcrafted with leather and adorned with swarowsky cristals or jewels
  • Three-quarter length ‘fisherman’s trousers’ perfect for keeping cool and comfortable
  • A lace dress
  • A bandana to tie around your head Jackie Onassis style
  • A bikini hand-knitted in the style that has been used since the very first bikini was made, or broad and colourful fifties style

The Positano style will take you from brunch at a café, to an afternoon’s sailing on a yacht, to dancing the night away at a nightclub. You will fit right in whether you are with bohemian artists or Hollywood movie stars.

and… for the “day after” make sure you pick up a large pair of sunglasses for warding off paparazzi or hangovers.

The kinds of items you can buy in Positano are one-of-a-kind pieces, which people will always comment about when they see you in them. They will make your friends green with envy. These pieces are extremely high quality and do not date. They stand out for the lightness of the fabrics, the vividness of the colors, and the adornments such as jewels and embroidery that take the clothes seamlessly from day to night. These pieces are made by hand, crafted by artists, and are a true investment in your wardrobe. They only problem is that they’ll never need replacing, which makes it harder to find an excuse for your next visit.
